Burn the Boats

Image
Faith Friday In the arena of life, there are two kinds of people: those who play it safe and those who dive headfirst into the fray, ready to conquer. If you want to be a high-value warrior in the battle of life, it’s is crucial that you Burn the Boats .  This isn’t just a catchy phrase; it’s a fundamental mindset that separates the weak from the strong. Imagine you're a Spanish Conquistador on the battlefield. You’ve landed on enemy shores of Mexico, and the only way to ensure victory is to eliminate any possibility of retreat. That’s what Hernán Cortés did when he ordered his soldiers to burn the ships. He left his men with no choice but to fight for their survival and victory. In life, it’s time to burn the boats; those safety nets and escape plans that keep you from going all in. You might be asking, “ What if I fail ?” Here’s the truth: failure is not the end; it’s part of the fight. When you put your complete faith in God, you become unstoppable. Every setback is just a setup...

Relentless Pursuit

Image
Monday Morning Motivation I, personally, am moving a mountain. One shovel at a time. I have a vision, a plan and a purpose. I am in Relentless Pursuit . I won’t quit. In a world where comfort often masquerades as success, the true measure of a man lies in his relentless pursuit of greatness. Joshua 1:9 says God is commanding to be strong and courageous, to rise above fear and doubt. It’s a call to battle, a reminder that we are not meant to cower in the shadows of our ambitions but to charge forward with unwavering resolve. What’s the mountain in your life? The impossible goal that looms large, taunting you with its enormity? This mountain is not just an obstacle; it is your assignment. You have been assigned this mountain to show others it can be moved! Every step you take, every drop of sweat, and every ounce of grit you muster serves not just to conquer your own challenges, but to inspire others to tackle theirs. To show the power of God. This is the core of true leadership: to bla...

Anchor

Since my last blog, I have taken some time to reflect on the things that have been put on my heart and mind to accomplish. The plan forward for my life and the direction that I am going. I am not going to get into the specifics but some of the things that God is leading me to feel impossible and really outside my control. A part is something familiar but impossible to achieve on my own, beyond that are things that are outside what I know. Some of this comes with a lot of criticism and resistance. I have spoken previously about waiting being a period of preparation. That is where I have been right now.  The Bible talks about harvesting crops as a metaphor for this waiting period and God's blessing. Planting season and harvesting season. It takes 4 months for crops to grow and be ready. So what happens while we wait? What if we don’t see the fruit of our labor? The Bible says Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is the tree of life. So if our desires go u...

Love

Image
If you love them, pray for them. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.     It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.   Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.     It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails”

Pride

Image
Pride is a double-edged sword. It can fuel ambition and drive, pushing excellence, but it can also lead us astray, blinding us to our flaws and ultimately lead to demise . This is sometimes easier said than done. However, when things can only be explained by God, there is a desire to keep the heart humble and   focus on Him. Proverbs 16:18   "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."   Last Sunday, post-Super Bowl comments from Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Head Coach Nick Sirianni, both gave all glory to God for their team's successes. Their humility in the face of triumph is perfect example of this.   Similarly, Boise State’s football coach, Spencer Danielson, famously begins every interview with "Praise Jesus” to openly share that the teams victories come by the Grace of God and the strength He gives the players.   Zechariah 4:6  “ Not by might, not by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord”   In the same way, I want t...

Purpose

Image
Everyone is born with a purpose or a desire in their heart to accomplish things that bring fulfillment to their lives. These are the reasons for getting up in the morning and they are as diverse as the individuals themselves. That is a good thing. If everyone had the same drive the world would be a pretty boring place. Much of this sense of purpose is shaped during our childhood, influenced by the behaviors and attitudes of those around us. I won’t ignore genetics but in a lot of ways, our reason for being driven for certain things is a product of the environment that we were raised, and God’s purpose for our life. It is the thing that drives us. Unfortunately, some people give up on that in the face of adversity. As children, we learn to speak by listening to our parents and to walk by watching them. We mimic these behaviors as a part of our development. As we grow, we pick up mannerisms and patterns from family, friends, and teachers. These mannerisms form our identity. How situatio...

Clarity

Image
This morning, the sun broke through the horizon, illuminating everything across the valley, radiating of the snow covered mountains. The air was crisp and invigorating, signaling a new day filled with potential. I felt a profound sense of clarity wash over me—a revelation about my journey and the purpose behind every twist and turn I’ve faced.  I have held onto Gods promise but I haven’t understood why I have had to endure so many obstacles. I see now that every challenge and setback was not in vain. Each moment has been a part of a larger story, leading me to this point of clarity and purpose. The battles I’ve fought have forged me into who I am today, preparing me to conquer the challenges ahead. Those details just make the story better. John 13:7  “ What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” Before these challenges, I lived a passive life, shackled by a darkened understanding of my potential. A major failure once loomed large, casting a s...

Fog

Image
This morning, a thick fog bared down the Treasure Valley. The air is cold, the sky dark, and everything is wrapped in a heavy gloom. It is one of those mornings where the world seems muted, and the usual vibrancy of life feels distant. Dull, grey and heavy. This dense fog is an eerie similarity of the heaviness that settles in on life. Just as the fog can settle in, obscuring the view and weighing life down, there are seasons of darkness; moments filled with doubt, fear, and uncertainty. It’s easy to feel trapped in the haze & believe that the gloom has stolen hope and it will never lift. Truth is: the sun is going to rise and burn away the fog. The SON did rise, and He will burn away our fog.  The sun will burn away the mist, and illuminate the world around us. No darkness can withstand the light. The light of Christ shines brightest in the darkest hour. John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” ...

Stand and Wait

Image
In a world that constantly demands our attention and pushes us to act, there’s a profound strength in standing firm, being still, and waiting. In our fast-paced lives, we often equate busyness with productivity and action with progress. But sometimes, the bravest choice we can make is to pause, gather our resolve, and trust in God’s plan. As men, we’re often conditioned to be the ones who take charge, to be the problem solvers and the protectors. But true strength isn’t just about being on the front lines; it’s also about knowing when to hold your ground.  Exodus 14:14 : “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” When facing challenges; whether in careers, relationships, or personal struggles there’s a temptation to rush into action, to react impulsively in an effort to regain control. However, in this chaos, it’s vital to remember that standing firm doesn’t mean being passive; it means being resolute in faith and trusting that God has our back. The act of wai...

Re-Ignited

Image
My most popular blog was Restoration , coming from the title of my site as a whole Re-ignited and Restored . This blog is about the other half of the name Re-ignited. Normally I talk, about putting out fires, but this is about creating one. A fire that represents our ultimate purpose in life that not only fulfills us but warms the hearts of other Life has a way of turning our worlds upside down, doesn’t it? One moment, everything feels stable and secure, and the next, we find ourselves in a place we never imagined—hitting rock bottom. I’ve been there, and I know many of you have too. It’s in those shadows, when everything seems lost, that our faith can feel extinguished. But what if I told you that hitting rock bottom can be the very catalyst for reigniting your faith? When we face unexpected challenges, be it loss, betrayal, or failure, we often question our purpose and even our worth. For me, I felt utterly defeated, as if all the energy had been drained from my spirit. It was ...

Snow Day

Image
This morning at the fire station, I got up early to read and drink my coffee, when I noticed that the world outside my window was blanketed in snow. The ground was covered in a pristine layer of white, a stunning reminder of God’s great power and creativity. Of course, I had to go outside and take it all in, I was struck by the beauty of it all, the entire landscape had transformed. It was quiet and still, with the snow absorbing all the sound. It was completely peaceful outside. Everything looked completely different from when I went to bed as if God had draped a blanket over the city.  The color white represents purity and renewal. This renewal felt significant, echoing the covering of His love.  Isaiah 1:18   “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”   As I walked through this winter wonderland, I felt a sense of calm wash over...

Mountains

Image
Yesterday, I had the incredible opportunity to "shred the gnar" with a good friend at Tamarack Resort in Donnelly, Idaho. When we arrived it was rainy and the snow was like peanut butter. The upper part of the mountain looked cold and windy but we had to assume that the snow was going to be much better  As I made my way to the top of the mountain, the cold air hit me, and the wind whipped around fiercely. Standing there surrounded by snow-capped peaks was a breathtaking moment, and I felt a deep sense of God’s presence. In that frigid, windy moment, looking out across the ridge I couldn’t help but think about how mountains have always held a special significance in the Bible. They often symbolize places where people encounter God. I thought about Moses on Mount Sinai, where he received the Ten Commandments. It felt like I was standing in that same holy space, a place where heaven and earth meet. Mountains represent so many things in the Bible. Challenges we face, places of pr...

Character-Habits-Mind

Image
Character is a powerful representation of who a person is; it reflects how various situations in life are handled. Romans 12:2 says that there is transformation through the renewing of the mind. This transformation is the foundation for a stronger character, and motivate change for a higher standard. A mind renewed can lead to healthier choices and actions, ultimately shaping character to be the best version possible. Character is shaped by habits, which, along with consistency in actions over time, defines identity. Every decision, no matter how small, contributes to the larger picture of character. Good habits, such as integrity, and compassion, build a solid foundation for a strong character. Conversely, bad habits like dishonesty or laziness erode character and lead to destructive patterns. In this way, habits act as the building blocks of character; they define how we respond to challenges, interact with others, and pursue our goals. In the fire service, where decisions are ma...

The Armor of God: The Sword of the Spirit

Image
Continuing the series on the Armor of God , next is the Sword of the Spirit . This post compares the Roman soldiers' sword to the firefighters' weapon; the hose line. It demonstrates their representation to the Sword of the Spirit and how it is connected to the rest of the armor through love. The Sword of the Spirit “...and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” The Roman Soldier's Sword (Gladius) The gladius was the primary weapon of the Roman soldier, typically around 18 to 24 inches long. Its design allowed soldiers to fight effectively in tight formations, making it a versatile tool for warfare. Short enough for tight spaces but long enough to deliver lethal thrusts and slashes. Made from iron or steel, tempered for strength and durability. Soldiers rigorously trained to master techniques that enabled swift attacks while maintaining a defensive posture. Characteristics of the Sword of the Spirit Offensive Weapon : Just as the gladius was essential for a R...
