Empathy
Masculinity is under attack, but empathy is one of the most masculine traits that get mistaken as softness
Empathy is not a weakness; it’s a fierce desire to love deeply and authentically. It’s a relentless pursuit of compassion that demands understanding of another's perspective and mental state. True empathy requires more than mere comprehension; it is the ability to physically feel and cognitively grasp the emotions of others to your very core
Understanding is one thing, but humility is another. Too often, we fall prey to the “not my problem” mindset, allowing this attitude to stifle our empathetic action. The stereotype that men shy away from the “touchy-feely” stuff is pervasive. We’ve been conditioned to believe that expressing emotion makes us soft or weak. Trust me, I’ve been there. I went through Boot Camp, where I was told that if the Navy wanted me to have feelings, they would’ve issued them in my seabag.
But here’s the truth: God instilled these emotions in us as men with a powerful command—to love one another. The warrior's heart springs from a well of love, empathy, and compassion. As the Bible says, “No greater love has a man than to lay down his life for a friend.”
Expressing emotions requires a level of emotional intelligence and the capacity to provide emotional security. We, as men, are called to love and lead. But how do we do this? According to 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, we must be patient, kind, humble, honest, genuine, and selfless. We are called to forgive without holding grudges and to be generous without expectation.
This love is about prioritizing the health, happiness, and success of those we care about. It means embracing our natural protective instincts, optimism, and perseverance. But how do we cultivate this if it doesn’t come naturally? The Bible instructs us to seek first the kingdom of God, “and then” all these things shall be added to you.” It also tells us to delight ourselves in the Lord, “and then” He will give us the desires of our heart.”
The key is “and then”. While Gods love is unconditional and not transactional, We must desire to be empathetic. We must be obedient. This is not a suggestion to act only when we're healthy, when we feel like it, or when we have the time. It’s a command to act now. “And then”, all these things will be added to us, fulfilling the desires of our hearts.
Aligning ourselves with God and His will is the foundation of our masculine nature. This alignment drives us in our careers, strengthens our leadership, and enriches our relationships with who we love, builds as fathers, and as friends.
Rise to the challenge. Embrace empathy, and unleash the warrior within.
