The Armor of God: The Belt of Truth

I am going to try something a little different with this blog and start a themed series. This first series is going to explore The Armor of God.
As Paul writes to the Ephesians, he describes the need for spiritual armor, comparing it to the gear worn by Roman soldiers. This analogy is powerful, as it allows us to visualize the significance of each piece in our daily spiritual battles. 2 Corinthians 10:4 “For the weapons of our warfare are not, carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.”  In this series, I will break down each element of God’s Armor, drawing parallels to the gear that firefighters wear, which serves as a modern representation of our spiritual preparedness.

The Armor of God: Ephesians 6:10-18
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

The Belt of Truth

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist.”

Our Identity in Christ

The Roman soldiers wore a distinctive belt known as a “cingulum,” a vital part of their armor that not only held their swords but also served as a symbol of their identity and rank. These belts were made of thick leather and decorated with metal plates. Whether in battle or not these belts identified them as soldiers. In a firefighter's gear, this concept is most similar to the suspenders that hold up their turnout pants. Suspenders have become iconic in the fire service. Firefighters are identified by their suspenders. Part of tradition has become custom leather suspenders often personalized with engravings that reflect the firefighter’s identity and unit. Much like the Roman Cingulum.

In the Bible, Paul calls this essential piece of armor the “belt of truth.” Just as the cingulum identifies a soldier, and suspenders identify a firefighter, truth should be our identity in Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; all things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

The Roman Cingulum, was a mandatory piece of equipment that had to be worn at all times to identify them as soldiers and what their rank and merits were. Comparing this to the Belt of Truth, it can be determined that the truth is always on display. No matter how much, we try to hide it or escape it, the truth always comes out. It is better to own the truth than, to conceal it.  There is no changing the past, only repenting, learning and growing away from it.

What is Truth?

When we think of truth, we often associate it with honesty or the absence of deceit. However, truth encompasses much more. Proverbs 12:19 says “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.” In the spiritual battlefield, truth serves as our weapon against deception. Jesus refers to the devil as the “father of lies” (John 8:44), and that truth stands as the ultimate counter to lies. So ultimately truth is the weapon against the enemy and his lies.

In John 14:6, Jesus boldly states, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” This declaration implies that God is not only the source of truth but He is the truth itself which defeats the enemy. When we arm ourselves with the truth of God's word, we wield a powerful weapon against the lies of Satan.

The other side of this is that the truth must be known and displayed. This can be taken in two ways. One is to share the truth of God's word, but the other is to own the truth after it has been hidden. John 8:32 says "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." The truth is a testament of who we are. There may be blemishes, that God removes in His eyes, but are permanent in the eyes of man. It may be evidence of who you have been, but only new additions to the Cingulum can show who you are now in your new identity in Christ.

The Function of the Belt

The Roman cingulum was used for carrying the soldier's sword. This metaphor is huge. The Belt of Truth supports the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. This is validation that the truth firmly holds and carries God’s promises, reinforcing that the Bible is the ultimate truth.

Now, look at the firefighter's suspenders. They are designed to hold up the turnout pants. Not to get into another piece of armor, but this parallel is important to describe. Firefighters keep their boots inside their turnout pants, so they can quickly be put on as one ensemble. So referencing them in this series, turnout pants and boots, represent the Shoes of Peace. The “Suspenders of Truth” hold up and support the “Turnout pants of Peace” In the spiritual, this indicates that truth brings and supports peace. Which is backed up by Psalm 85:10 ”Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other.” There is a clear connection: truth (which embodies faithfulness and righteousness) is essential for fostering peace and love. Colossians 3:14 further supports this: “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Hang with me here: If God is love (1 John 4:8), we can conclude that truth is love,  because, as was said earlier, God is the truth. (John 14:6)  If I lost you, I will summarize: the belt of truth is also the belt of love which upholds peace and it binds everything together. Which is also the function of a belt, binding everything together. Truth, love and peace are all connected through God.

In summary, the belt of truth serves multiple vital functions:

  • It defeats the enemy, who is the father of lies.
  • It supports the Word of God, ensuring that we hold fast to His promises.
  • It upholds peace, demonstrating that truth, faithfulness, and righteousness work together in love. Love binds everything together
  • It is our identity in Christ, as a new creation.
  • It is a testament, displaying who we are and who we have been

In this journey to understand the Armor of God, remember the foundational role of truth in our lives. Wear the belt of truth proudly, ensuring that our identity reflects the unwavering faith and love of Christ.

Stay tuned as I continue this series, exploring the next pieces of the Armor of God and how they can equip us for the spiritual battles we face daily.

*If you read this prior to Jan 27th at 7:40pm. I encourage you to read it again particularly the parts in italics. In preparing for the next post, I was convicted to add this information acknowledging that truth is on full display at all times. This is a vital part of my path and journey.
