The Armor of God: The Helmet of Salvation

Image
Part five of the Armor of God series is the Helmet of Salvation. This looks at what Salvation is, where it comes from and how to receive it. It compares the Roman soldier's helmet to the helmet firefighters wear. It continues exploring the theme of love binding all the armor pieces together, and explains the role Salvation has on our life. Ephesians 6:17   “Take the Helmet of Salvation...” Understanding Salvation The Greek word for salvation is σῴζω (sōzō) , meaning "to save, to deliver, to protect." The noun form, σωτηρία (sōtēria) , translates to "salvation, deliverance, or preservation." In the Bible, salvation signifies deliverance from sin and its consequences, leading to eternal life with God. It embodies rescue from spiritual death and separation from God, granting forgiveness and reconciliation through faith in Jesus Christ. John 3:16 : "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but ...

The Armor of God: The Shield of Faith

Image
Thank you for continuing to read this series about the Armor of God. Today's topic is so vast and has so much meaning. The word Faith is used 245 times in the Bible. I decided to focus on a practical application to what is on my heart, and I hope it benefits you as well. The next piece of armor is The Shield of Faith   “In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one”  Understanding Faith I think it is important to have a true understanding of Paul’s meaning when he is describing the Armor of God. Seeing that he was speaking to the Church of Ephesus, he likely was speaking Greek. The original Greek word for Faith is πίστις (pistis) which has 3 meanings. Trust and Confidence, a Belief System, and Loyalty. Basically, faith isn’t just a mental acknowledgment of God’s existence but a deep-seated trust in His promises Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance in things not seen...

The Armor of God: The Shoes of Peace

Image
Continuing the journey through the full armor of God,next is the Shoes of Peace . Just as Roman soldiers wore sturdy sandals, known as caligae, designed for mobility and protection, firefighters don their turn-out pants and boots.. Both types of footwear serve vital roles in providing stability, traction, and readiness for action. “...and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” Roman Caligae and  Firefighter Turnout Pants & Boots The caligae were not just ordinary sandals; they featured thick soles with studs for traction, allowing soldiers to brace themselves during battle. This design enabled them to move swiftly and effectively, even in challenging terrains. The shoes symbolized a soldier's readiness to engage and defend, much like the call to action from this verse. Similarly, firefighters' turn-out pants and boots are kept attached so they can quickly be donned in emergencies. Same as the turnout coat, the pants are made from fir...

The Armor of God: The Breastplate of Righteousness

Image
As we continue our exploration of the Armor of God, today’s discussion is about the Breastplate of Righteousness . Just as the breastplate protects a soldier, the breastplate of righteousness shields our hearts and souls in the spiritual battles we face daily. The Construction and Function of the Breastplate and Turnout Coat The Roman breastplate was made of bronze or iron. It was a symbol of strength and identity for a soldier. It was built to fit snugly around the torso, providing protection to vital organs like the heart and lungs, while still allowing for movement in battle. This piece of armor served not only as a shield against physical attacks but also as a representation of the soldier's commitment to their cause. Soilders we easily recognized by this breastplate; representative to their righteousness. Similarly, firefighters wear turnout coats designed with multiple layers, combining flame-resistant materials and waterproof barriers to protect them from extreme heat...
